Numerical and Experimental Investigations on Hydrodynamic Performance of a Newly Designed Deep Bottom Trawl

In this paper, a new type of bottom trawl was designed for target fishing vessels to use in deep-water grounds. The trawl’s hydrodynamic performance investigated using numerical simulation and physical modeling methods, model based on the finite element method proposed estimating forces predicting performances. A series tests Tauti’s law were carried out towing tank explore assess applicability method. results showed that working speed 3.5 kn. drag force height net opening 50 kN 5.62 m, respectively, swept area 128 m 2 at speed. simulated result close experimental result, with maximum relative error less than 20%, an average 10%. shape tension distribution analyzed method, hanging ratio T-direction mesh codend 0.25 newly deep had superior high catch efficiency selectivity may be applied commercial operations.
